Halloween Scary Movie List


Every Halloween, Josh and I sit down and have a scary movie marathon.  Sometimes we do themes, or watch a bunch of movies in a series.  Last year, we did a lot of 90's scary movies, like Scream.

This year, we've made a list of movies we've never seen, or ones that we haven't seen in a very long time.  I wanted to share with you all.

Bloody Heart Beet and Kidney Chili


This weekend, I finally got back into the kitchen.  We had friends in town, we went to an afternoon Halloween party, and we made chili and watched scary movies with more friends.  It was jam packed, and by Sunday I was pretty tired.




For the afternoon Halloween party, there would be a lot of our friends and their kids in attendance, so I thought I would make some fun treats.  I used this cupcake recipe, and instead of peanut butter in the frosting, I used pumpkin.  I didn't use any of the cookies in the recipe, but it turned out great.  I also made these peanut butter cookies, which everyone always loves.




When we got back to the house after the party, I whipped up this chili with mostly ingredients from our winter CSA basket.  It was spicy and tasty, and we had it with a habanero cashew cream sauce.  It was spicy and warming, and it went great with scary movies.

Bloody Heart Beet and Kidney Chili


  • 2 red onions, diced
  • 3 tbs EVOO
  • 1 head of garlic, peeled and minced
  • spice mix
    • 1 tbs ancho chili powder
    • 1 tbs chili powder
    • 1 tsp nutmeg
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 1 tbs cumin seeds
  • 1 dark beer
  • 2 large beets, peeled and diced
  • 1 large head of kale, chopped fine
  • 32 oz vegetable stock
  • 3 Serrano peppers
  • 2 cans organic pinto beans
  • 2 green bell peppers, diced
  • 2 red bell peppers, diced
  • 2 cups vegan ground meat crumbles
  • 2 yellow squash, shredded
  • 2 squares dark chocolate, grated
  1. Pre-dice all vegetables.
  2. In a large pot, heat 3 tbs olive oil on medium/high heat.
  3. Add onions and a pinch of salt.
  4. Saute for 15 minutes, stirring often.
  5. Add garlic.
  6. Saute for 2 minutes, constantly stirring.
  7. Add spice mix and stir for 1 minute.
  8. Add dark beer.
  9. Add in beets and squash and bring to a boil.
  10. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  11. Add vegetable stock, kale, crumbles, and peppers.
  12. Bring to a boil.
  13. Simmer for 20 minutes.
  14. Add in beans with can water.
  15. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  16. Grate chocolate over the top.
  17. Serve with your favorite cornbead.  I always use the Veganomicon.


To make the cashew cream, I just added 1 habanero pepper without seeds to my typical cashew cream recipe.  It had a nice heat and added depth to the chili.


I'm sure we'll be making lots of chili this year, but this first one was a great start!

Paint Night Little Rock


Every now and then, my sister and I head over to Hibernia for Paint Night Little Rock.  I may or may not have made a bit of a reputation of painting penises in all the assigned pictures.  Who knows how that rumor got started.. hehe



Before I headed to meet my sister for painting, Josh and I met up at Two Rivers Park for a walk.  We've been really enjoying the lower temperatures lately, and it was a nice after work date.




Instead of canvases, we painted on Styrofoam pumpkins.  There weren't many people, so we each got to do two.  I knew I wanted to do a meeseeks pumpkin, from Rick and Morty.  Josh and I love the show, and I wanted him to have one for his desk at work.



By popular demand, I may or may not have painted another pumpkin with dicks all over it.  There's no solid evidence on this matter.

The meeseeks one turned out great.  Another girl in front of me wanted one, too, so I painted two.



Casey and I had fun, and I now want to make tons of pumpkins for our house.  They're really easy to paint on.  We probably won't carve pumpkins this year, so these were great.  I loved all the Nightmare before Christmas skulls.

Fitness Friday: 30 Day Yoga Challenge


I miss my yoga mat.  When I got pregnant in August, I took yoga occasionally, but nowhere near the level I was previously.  I was tired all the time, and I favored my bed over workouts.  During the miscarriage, I have really been out of my fitness routine.  Josh and I have made it a point to do a lot of morning and after work walking, and we went hiking a few weekends ago, but I haven't done a whole lot to make me feel like me.

The best thing I can think to do to revive myself and get back into my life is to turn to yoga.  It has always been there to quiet my mind and help me reconnect with my body.  So, for the month of November, I'm going to dive in.  I have challenged myself to do 30 days of yoga, whether that be 5 simple sun salutations at home or a class at my favorite studio.

Because I exist in a world of parameters, and do well when given a task, I have devised for myself a rough schedule of practice for the next month.


I challenge all of you to look at your life and see if you find something you are missing.  Do you want to focus on painting more, or cooking home meals, or walking your beloved pet?  Well, we can make November a month to really reconnect with a part of our lives we may have found lacking.  I challenge you to make a schedule for yourself, whatever it may be, and stick to it.

Who knows, maybe December will be a month to tackle something else!

5 Things I'm Loving Lately


While things have been a little hard lately, I've been really trying to focus on the things that make me happy.  There are a lot of them, actually, like Josh, vegan boots, anything with skulls on them, and our kitties.  Those are nothing new, though, so I wanted to share with you guys the 5 things that I'm currently obsessed with.


Outlander.  I started this book series on our honeymoon, and I'm midway through the 2nd book right now.  I really love it, and I've been watching the show that has been recently adapted from the story.  It's hot and follows the books perfectly.  If you like scots, time traveling, British drama, and the like, definitely check this out.


Diva Cup.  So, this might be a little tmi, but I'm currently OBSESSED with the diva cup.  I'm not sure how I got to 30 without trying one of these, but it's awesome and so easy.  Anyone else use one?


Scary Movies.  When I was pregnant, I had an intense aversion to anything scary or dramatic.  Any time we tried to watch something, I got nauseated and had to watch cartoons.  So, since it's almost Halloween, I'm watching as many horror movies and as much Walking Dead as I can.


Plaid.  I'm glad this is in for the winter, because I like plaid.  I recently picked up a cute plaid scarf at Modcloth and some button ups from Target's plus size line.


Tea.  You're not supposed to drink herbal tea when you're pregnant, so my daily teapot ritual was out the window.  So, recently, I've been finding any excuse to have a nice tea ceremony at my desk.  I recently went to a gorgeous tea shop and stalked up on a bunch of herbal tea for the fall.

Monday Musings: Stimulants and Sedatives


If you've been reading my blog for very long, or know me in person, you know that my relationship with alcohol is sometimes on and off.  During the Arbonne detox last spring, I gave it up and felt amazing, but it made its way back into my life.  When we decided to start trying to conceive, I stopped drinking completely.  I also went off caffeine, because I thought it would be hard to do so once full of pregnancy hormones.

Through the couple months that I was pregnant, I didn't partake in any alcohol or caffeine.  When we found out we were losing the pregnancy, I still didn't reach for them.  I knew I would grieve, and I knew it would be intense, and I didn't want to rely on anything to dull my senses and my pain.  I knew I would need to feel it.

As I'm coming out of the grief and returning to normal life, I find myself adverse to the idea of these stimulants and sedatives.  Not to say that either one of these should be shunned or make you a bad person if you partake, but I can't seem to imagine incorporating them back into my life.. alcohol in particular.

Drinking has been a part of my life for over a decade, and it was once the core of all social interaction.  Since I've been experiencing life, parties, weekends, and work events sober, I feel I'm more engaged and in control.  I don't find myself jealous that I can't drink or sad about it.  I simply enjoy myself, laugh, act goofy, and do the things I normally do.  The difference is the way I feel by the end of the night and in the morning.  I feel good.

Another interesting interaction I'm experiencing is my relationship with food.  When drinking daily or almost so, I would find myself unable to hear my natural hunger cues, and all food tasted pretty good.  Now, I'm finding that I have no real interest in food when I'm not hungry, and if things aren't truly tasty, I just don't eat them.  This is really weird for me, because this is not normal.

We plan on trying to conceive again in a few months, and I don't want to go through the process of stopping alcohol and caffeine all over again.  I know I had nothing to do with my miscarriage, but I truly want to put my body in the healthiest possible state when we try to grow a human again.  So, I think I'll be reaching for water instead of wine, and rooboos instead of Earl Gray.  For now, it's really working, and I'm interested to see where this new lifestyle will take me.

Fall in Fayetteville


Fall was in full swing this weekend, with temperatures dipping down into the 40's in Fayetteville at night.  It was beautiful, and I spent a very lovely Saturday having brunch, riding electric golf carts, buying tea, smiling, taking way too many selfies, watching our beloved Hogs lose to 'Bama, and cooking dinner for my friends.

Since it's Friday, I just thought I'd share with you guys pictures from the weekend.  They speak for themselves.
