Foodshed Farms CSA: Week 2

Last Friday, I picked up my second CSA basket from Foodshed Farms.  During the wedding weekend, my friend Kimmy picked up my second basket, so this is technically the 3rd week.

I pick up my basket at St. Joseph's, which I feel is a crazy interesting building.  There is so much history there, and architecturally it's very neat.  I love getting to pick up veggies here.

This week, my box was still overflowing with greens.  Can't complain!

I got two yummy looking heads of lettuce and a big bag of kale.  When I lifted these out, I saw something peaking beneath....

BEETS!  I was so excited!  They quickly got roasted up for lunch salads.  I love beets.

Oh no... this week's box has arugula again!  I'll find another home for this crap.

I pulled out this bag of green beans and jumped for joy.  I love fresh green beans, and they're one of Josh's favorite dinner veg.

It's a glorious day when broccoli is in season!  This got roasted up with some red potatoes as a side dish for our dinner.  Why is broccoli so delicious?

Lastly, we got these beautiful green onions.  They'll be great on salads as well.

That was our box this week.  Everything was so fresh and tasty.  I can't wait to see what we get this week!

Josh Weds Dana: The Food

We wanted good food and drink at our wedding, and we definitely got it.  Now, Josh isn't vegan, so we had a mix of vegan and non-vegan items.  We did a taco bar, which was heavy on the veggies, and the cupcakes and toppings were all vegan.  Cafe 42 of the Clinton Library did the food, and Blue Cake Company did the cupcakes.

We had vegan Mexican street corn, rice, and beans and corn.  There was also a KILLER tofu filling for the various types of tacos.  The cheese dip was not vegan.

We also had a chips and salsa bar with all sorts of yummy toppings for the tacos.  We also had vegan tamales, carrot salad, and jicama slaw.  You can see the amazing tofu filling in the picture above.  It was fantastic.  We had so many of our guests tell us how much they liked the tofu, which I thought was a great thing.  We only had two other vegans attending, our friends Sheridan and Drew, but everyone told us how much they liked the food.  We chose not to make the menu fully vegan, because we wanted it to reflect both of us, but I'm glad we got to expose our guest to a lot of tasty vegan eats.

Thankfully, our friends were nice enough to make us a plate.  We nibbled on our dishes, but we didn't have much time to eat.  I'm glad we got to try a little bit, though.  The food was so good.

We had chocolate, vanilla, and Italian wedding cupcakes, with a dollop of vegan whipped topping.  Cafe 42 provided a berry compote to go on top.  So yummy!  So many people asked, "Are those cupcakes really vegan?!  They are so good!"  Well yes, vegan cupcakes are AMAZING.

We did the feeding of cupcakes, but no face smashing.  I chickened out at the last minute.

Lastly, we had an open beer and wine bar, with regional beer.  I didn't have any wine, but I did have a few Marshall beers over the course of the day.  It was pretty impossible to finish a drink, because Josh and I were constantly talking to people, taking pictures, or dancing.  So much fun though!  I have no regrets.

Josh Weds Dana in Pictures

Words really can't express how wonderful our wedding experience was.  It was joyful, hilarious, and went by too quickly.  We were surrounded by our friends and family, and everything went great.  Instead of describing the day, take a peek at the pictures.  They really do express the fun and joy of the day.  Our photographer, Jason Crader, was absolutely amazing.

Zhajiang Noodles at Three Fold

Three Fold has easily become my favorite new restaurant in Little Rock, because they have a simple, elegant menu that gives equal weight to vegetarian dishes.  They really put a lot of care into their food, which are vegan friendly, and they recently added a new Saturday only dish, Zhajiang noodles.

After some internet sleuthing, I found that zhajiang is a salty, fermented soybean paste, traditionally served over wheat noodles and pork.  Three Fold wants to make sure that their veggie patrons get options, too, so they have a tofu dish as well.  I recently tried it, and it was very tasty.

The noodles are topped with cucumber and cilantro, which really help to cut the spicy noodles.  You get an incredible amount of food, as well.  Josh and I split some dumplings with this noodle bowl, and we had tons of leftovers to take home.  Don't get me started on how good the dumplings are... definitely my favorite dish.

I like these Saturday-only noodles even better than their regular noodle dish.  It's definitely worth going and checking out.  If you're lucky, they'll be serving these sesame balls as well, which are sweet and lightly fried.

They are filled with red bean paste and are incredibly tasty, much like everything else at Three Fold.

Unfortunately, I missed the most recent 8 course vegetarian dinner at the restaurant, but I did get to interview the crew before the dinner.  You can see my write up here.

I'm sure a lot of you regular readers want to see some wedding pictures!  I haven't received the professional photographer shots, yet, but here are some pictures I stole from my friends.  I'll do a more detailed post soon, but it was amazing, I married my best friend, and there were DINOSAURS!

On Monday, we went to turn in our marriage license, and lucky for us, Three Fold is right around the block.  So, we celebrated with some tasty food.

I got the half noodles/half buns with spicy sauce.  It was so yummy!

Not only is the food great, but the people running Three Fold are truly lovely.  Josh has become obsessed with their bun.  If you haven't checked them out already, you're missing out!

VV Recap: Restaurant Meals

Josh and I try to eat at home most of the time.  I'd say on average, we eat out once or twice on the weekends.  Sometimes, though, we like to sit down and have someone else bring us food, and in those instances, I try to make fresh food choices.  Sometimes are better than others, but I have been getting some tasty meals lately.

I'm still obsessed with our new Whole Foods' salad bar.  Apparently, I am not good at portion control, either.  They have so much great stuff there, that it's hard not to eat everything.

Prime example is their vegan sushi.  I want to get some every time I walk into the store.  It's really good.

I had a tasty lunch at Forbidden Garden comprised of steamed veggies and delightfully crispy tofu triangles.

It's strawberry season in Arkansas, which I have proclaimed here about 100 times, and that means it's strawberry salad season at Izzy's.

Josh and I had a date night recently at one of our favorite restaurants, Layla's.  I hadn't been in awhile, and I always happy when I go.

We went to pick up our marriage license back in the beginning of May, and it just so happened that the county clerk's office was right down the block from Three Fold.  We headed there after to get buns for lunch.  The sandwiches are unlike anything you can get anywhere else around.  So. good.  They had a big vegetarian 8 course dinner the night of our wedding, which I was very sad to miss.

While out on a job site visit awhile back, my coworker and I stopped off for lunch at Marketplace Grill.  I'm not usually over impressed by this restaurant, and this time wasn't much different.  The chips and salsa were really tasty, but this veggie stir fry was only so-so.  Really, it's supposed to be a chicken dish, which I had them leave out.  I think if they hadn't used so much sauce, it would have been pretty good.

Lastly, Josh and I were looking for something good to eat when running errands in North Little Rock, and we remembered that a new Bar Louie opened in the back of our mall.  We eat at the one in Little Rock every now and then, so we gave this one a try.  I branched out from my usual veggie wrap and went for the Monoco Salad with Portabello, and I was happily surprised with the bright pile of veggies and apples.  I got a side of broccoli just because, well, broccoli is awesome.
