LR Restaurant Review: The Root Cafe

The Root Cafe is a local restaurant in South Main Street (SoMa) that has been dishing out great vegan meals for several years now.  I'm surprised that this is my first review, but honestly, I've only eaten there a few times.  They are only open for lunches, and the area isn't on my normal day to day travel, but I love heading down to SoMa for an afternoon.

The restaurant is small but inviting, and it's always cram packed with people.  They recently got a grant which will allow them to open for dinner, so I'm looking forward to what they'll offer.  I headed there on Saturday for brunch with some lovely ladies, and I knew I wanted the tofu bahn mi.  I also ordered an Americano with soymilk, and this delicious vegan brownie.

I took the brownie home for later, and it was delicious.  The coffee was the perfect way to start a Saturday.

When our breakfast was brought out, I was a little surprised.  I had assumed that a tofu bahn mi would be a sandwich, but instead, there was all the components of a bahn mi on the plate.  I had a flash of disappointment, but overall, the meal was delicious.  The side salad was really tasty, and I like that most of their dishes come with a salad and home made dressing.

The Root is a little crowded at times, and the kitchen is small, but the food is made with love and local ingredients.  I think it's a good asset for Little Rock and the vegan community.  There aren't many places you can get tofu scramble for brunch.  I'll definitely be coming back.

  1. Hey, I'm pretty sure they do brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, so you received the breakfast/brunch tofu scramble version of the banh mi. If you are ever able to go for a weekday lunch, then you would be able to order the sandwich version, which is out-of-this-world-good! It has crusty/chewy bread and little fried squares of tofu instead of the scramble. Let me know if you're ever able to head that way for lunch on a weekday and maybe we can meet up!

    1. Oh that sounds much better! I was really looking forward too a sandwich. I could definitely come down there on a Friday for lunch, but any other day it's too far from my office and they take too long. Very tasty, though!
