Fitness Friday: April Workouts

Workouts:  They are the compliment to most long term weight loss strategies, but more than anything, they keep me sane.  I have always loved being physically active, even if I've had bouts of couch potato-ness and depression.  Physical fitness keeps me smiling, and I believe it is helping keep my body and my skin tight through weight loss.  Sometimes, it slows my weight loss, as I saw this month, but I would not trade workouts to see the number on the scale go lower.  Finding balance is what it's all about.

In April, I got in consistent workouts.  I focused more on morning DVD workouts than my usual, after work classes.  I found that workout out in the morning made me a hungry beast for the rest of the day, so I added a small, protein filled salad to my lunch and some almonds for a snack.  That seemed to help.  I can feel that the strength training I started, namely Body Revolution, is helping my form in yoga and my performance on runs.  Oh yeah, running!   I started that back again, too.  After the half marathon at the beginning of March, my running slowed and then completely dropped off.  Starting last week, though, I hit the pavement again, and I am working on speed with Josh.

I also retired my 2 year old pair of Nike Freestyles for a new pair of Nike Free 5.0.  I've taken them out once and are loving them.  I'm a big fan of the minimalist running shoe.  I own a pair of Vibram five fingers, but I don't run long distances in them.  The flexible tennis shoe is a nice balance between the Vibrams and a typical running shoe.

Spring is here, and the weather is nice!  I'm trying to get in as much running as I can before it gets too hot outside.

Goals for May

  • Weight train 2 mornings a week.
  • Run 3 days a week.
  • Attend yoga 2 days a week.
  • Complete a yoga retreat next weekend!
  • GET BACK ON MY BIKE!

Big Dam Bridge 100 Race, 2012

I have a bike race at the beginning of June, and surgery last year kept me off my bike for all of 2013.  I plan on going for a 62 mile ride at Tour de Rock, so it's time to get back on my bike.

My weight loss has stalled all through April, so that's something else I'm focusing on hard.  I know that plateaus are normal in any weight loss plan, but I'm ready to break through and keep going!
