LR Restaurant Review: The Fold

Mexican food is my favorite type of food. There, I said it.  It's true.  I like a lot of different kinds, but if you tell me that there's a new taco place in town, I'm going to go try it.  I have been seeing The Fold being worked on for the past few months, because it is right next to my yoga studio.

Knowing that I was going here for dinner, I tried to eat moderately the rest of the day.  I started off with a protein shake, moved onto olives and nuts for a snack, and had lunch next door at Larry's Pizza.  Their salad bar isn't bad, and I always find plenty to load my plate up with.

My friend, Erin, met me for Lunar Yoga at 6, and we worked up a pretty good appetite.  We headed next door to The Fold at around 7:30, and the place was PAAAACKED!  The hostess said that the wait would be 30-45 minutes, but after about 5 minutes of standing, we snagged two seats at the bar.  The place is really loud when there are a bunch of people in there, but it has a nice atmosphere.  There is outdoor seating as well, but we were inside in front of their snazzy bar.

I ordered a drink while we contemplated eating at the bar or waiting for our table.  We also ordered their guacamole.  Warning vegans, it comes out with a bit of cheese on the top.  Luckily, Erin is a vegetarian, and she scooped it up.  I was unaware that it would have cheese on it, so next time I'll just specify without.  The guac was amazing, though!

The Mule, YUM!
We decided to just order and eat at the bar.  This may have been a mistake, because the bar tenders were so busy that the service was less than stellar.  They were trying, though, and the kitchen was really backed up.  I will save judgement on the service until I go again.  The food was so good, I wasn't concerned.

We scoped out the menu and settled on a few items to split and a plate of tacos each.  They only have one vegetarian/vegan taco option, but maybe they'll add more.  Their ingredients for everything are super fresh, and they have a lot of tapas options that are vegan or could be made such.

MANGO CARROT SLAW

Yum, yum, and YUM!  Erin said this came with tortillas on Saturday, but I will take chips any day.  The slaw was fresh and not too over done with a heavy sauce.  I would love to see more grapefruit, but I know not everyone digs that.

JICAMA CON CHILE Y LIMON

This was a really beautiful and exciting dish.  The sauce was spicy and delicious, and the vegetables paired really well with the fruit and lime sauce.  We had to deconstruct it to split it, but it was really amazing.  It was so good that it didn't last very long on our plate.

Overall, I think the tapas are reasonably priced and a good size for trying several different ones.  It was great to split all of them with someone as well.

THE LOCO TACO PLATE

We had a little bit of a fiasco with our tacos, only because it was so loud the bar tender had trouble taking our order.  We intended to order 2 taco plates each, which would have come with 3 tacos and chips.  Somehow, we each got two tacos.  When they came, we asked for the other tacos and happily ate the two we had while we waited.  Wanting to try the salsa, I ordered a little bit of their red and green on the side.  The salsas made these tacos stellar, but I'm sure they would be good on their own.  The ingredients were so fresh and delicious that I wanted to eat about 5 tacos.  One down side is we had to wait about an hour for our other two tacos, which is a bit ridiculous, but the kitchen was crazy busy.  Next time, I will just be clear with the wait staff.

Overall, I will be coming back here.  The food is light and fresh, and the atmosphere is busy and fun.  I think Little Rock seems to be excited about their new restaurant, and I hope it stays around.  It will definitely be a great summer hangout place!
